Poulami Das, a Ph.D. candidate in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), has won the “Best Research Award” at the Ph.D. Forum during this year’s Design Automation Conference (DAC).

The Ph.D. Forum at DAC is a poster session hosted by the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Design Automation (ACM SIGDA) for Ph.D. students to present and discuss their dissertation research. It has become one of the premier forums for Ph.D. students in design automation to get feedback on their research and for industry to see academic work in progress. Participation in the forum is competitive with acceptance rate of around 30%.

Das was recognized for her Ph.D. thesis research, “Architecture and Software for Reliable Quantum Computing.” Quantum computers promise substantial speedup for many important applications, but high-error rates of qubit devices limit running quantum programs with high fidelity. Das’ research bridges this gap by developing compiler optimizations to mitigate errors in the near-term and architecture/system-level solutions to enable fault-tolerance in the long run.

Das is advised by Moinuddin Qureshi, professor in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. She is the recipient of the Microsoft Research Ph.D Fellowship and received this year’s Colonel Oscar P. Cleaver Award for most outstanding Ph.D. dissertation proposal in ECE.

The 59th annual DAC was held July 10-14, 2022, in San Francisco. The conference is recognized as the premier event for the design and design automation of electronic chips to systems. It is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is supported by ACM's Special Interest Group on Design Automation (SIGDA) and IEEE's Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA).
