Full name:
Samuel Bignardi
Job title:
Research Engineer II

Dr. Bignardi obtained both his M.S. degree in Physics and his Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Ferrara (Italy).

During his Ph.D., he had multiple collaborations with the Georgia Institute of Technology where he spent a year as a visiting student in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

After completing his Ph.D. in 2011 with highest honors, he continued his research as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences at the University of Ferrara. The appointment lasted almost six years, up to 2017, with only one interruption of six months in 2014, when he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

In 2017, he obtained a Research Scientist II position at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

His research interests fall broadly within the fields of applied physics, geophysics, and non-invasive investigations; and are particularly tailored to problems in geophysics, civil and environmental engineering, geo-resources exploration, geology and hydrogeology, seismic risk assessment, and even cultural heritage.

While he recently developed a growing interest in radar applications (SAR) and modeling for medical imaging purposes, much of Dr. Bignardi's previous work focused on innovative algorithms development. Further, during his interdisciplinary experience, he became acquainted with the geophysical methods listed below, which find a broad set of applications across different disciplines.

  • Surface Waves Methods, for example: SASW, MASW, SPAC, REMI, ESAC and HVSR (Microseism)
  • Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT)
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
  • Reflection and Refraction Seismic
  • P-waves Tomography
  • Time Domain Electromagnetic Method (TEM)

Research interests:
  • Innovative Non-invasive Investigation Methods
  • Wave Propagation Modeling and Inversion
  • Applied Physics
  • Computation and Algorithms Development
