Professor Hertling was born in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up in Belleville, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois receiving the BSEE and MS degrees in 1970 and 1971 respectively. He then entered the U.S. Navy where he served as the electrical repair officer onboard the destroyer tender USS Samuel Gompers.

After leaving active duty he returned to the University of Illinois earning his Ph.D. in 1977 After leaving the University of Illinois he was employed by the Harris Corporation and was engaged in the design of high power broadcast transmitters.

He joined the Georgia Tech faculty in 1978 and has been actively involved in both teaching and research in the areas of electronics, radio frequency electronics, modeling of active devices, computer-aided design and analysis of circuits, and computer-aided design of planar dipole phased antenna arrays.

Professor Hertling holds two US patents, has consulted with many companies and has been actively involved with the teaching of continuing education courses. His hobbies include tennis, golf, auto mechanics, and amateur radio.
