Title:  Microgrid Energy Management System with Ancillary Services to the Grid

The objective of the proposed research is to model a microgrid energy management system (µGEMS) that optimally coordinates the microgrid resources including home controllable devices with the objective of minimizing the operational cost and maximizing the provision of ancillary services to the power grid. The proliferation of renewable energy resources integration into the power grid creates operational problems as they increase the variability and uncertainty of the generation system. Microgrids are great candidates for assisting the power grid in resolving the operational problems as they contain a verity of flexible fast-responding resources (e.g., energy storage systems and home controllable devices). However, these resources need to be managed properly in order to utilize their potential and maximize the provision of ancillary services to the power grid. The proposed µGEMS is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem. We propose an algorithm to solve the MINLP problem based on successive linear programming (SLP) which promises computational speed and efficient handling of integer variables.
