For Medical or Police emergencies, the contact number is 4-2500 (GT POLICE).
In case of fire pull the nearest fire alarm, and call the GT POLICE
at 4-2500.
Know the locations of Eye washes, Showers, First AID Kits and Fire
Extinguishers in the Laboratory.
Know and use the appropriate Fire Extinguisher for the particular
fire in question.
The primary emergency exit is through the gowning room, secondary
emergency exits are through the maintenance core doors, tertiary exits
are the 2 large doors at the front of the cleanroom core.
If a Flammable Chemical spill occurs, extinguish all sources of spark.
Avoid breathing vapors from chemical spills.
Contact the appropriate personnel if a large spill occurs or if a
spill contains highly toxic or carcinogen chemicals.
Housekeeping Protocols
- Leave the area at least as clean as you found it, if not cleaner.
- Insure trash containers are closed after use.
- Turn off room lights when not in use.
- Use the proper Chemical Spill Kit for cleaning up chemical spills.
- Keep work areas free from obstructions.
- Aisles, hallways and steps are not to be used for storage.
General Safety Protocols
- Only authorized personnel may enter cleanroom unescorted.
- Visitors must be escorted by a cleanroom qualified faculty/staff member. In addition, they must sign in/out in the visitor log.
- Under NO circumstances should anyone be in the cleanroom alone.
- No food or drink is permitted in the cleanroom.
- Wear safety glasses at all times if chemical or hazardous operations are being performed in the cleanroom by anyone.
- No open toe shoes or sandals are to be worn in the Prototype Laboratories.
- Appropriate behavior is expected at all times, NO HORSEPLAY.
- Do not climb on equipment - use appropriate stepping devices.
- Be sure containers are properly grounded when pouring flammable liquids.
- Always pour acids into water, not the reverse.
- Contact Lenses are not to be worn in the cleanroom unless protective goggles are worn.
Chemical Safety Protocols
- Cleanroom latex gloves DO NOT provide chemical protection, use the appropriate glove for your application.
- Waste wipes containing chemicals are to be placed in appropriately labeled chemical waste cans.
- Store chemicals in the appropriate chemical storage cabinets.
- Chemicals are to be stored in appropriate containers.
- All chemical containers are to be appropriately labeled, include: owner name, date, chemical name, manufacturer, chemical class category, flammability rating, expiration date and quantity.
- DO NOT store chemicals in fume hoods or on work surfaces.
- Follow Chemical Introduction Protocol before any chemicals are introduced into any prototype laboratory.
- When pouring chemicals, gloves, face shield, and aprons are to be worn, in addition to safety glasses and cleanroom gloves.
- No food or drinks are to be stored in any laboratory freezer or refrigerator.
- No chemicals are to be pipetted by mouth.
Equipment and Tool Usage/Maintenance
- Only Operation Certified Personnel may operate any cleanroom equipment.
- Persons may only operate equipment for which they are certified to operate.
- Only Maintenance Authorized Personnel are to perform equipment repairs, adjustments or programs modifications or calibrations.
- If your work requires equipment modifications or program adjustments, note the original settings in the equipment logbook and return to the original settings upon completion.
- Place tools back where they belong immediately after use.
- Do not modify equipment without the prior approval of the laboratory manager.
- All equipment repairs are to be recorded in the appropriate maintenance log.
- Use only tools for which you are trained to operate.
- All equipment usage is to be coordinated by using with the on-line scheduler.
Cleanroom Protocols
- All doors are to remain closed except to exit or enter.
- Be sure to step on tacky mats when entering the cleanroom.
- Keep hair and ears covered with hoods or bonnets.
- Personnel with mustaches or beards must wear beard guards in all Prototype Laboratories.
- Never open your coveralls in the cleanroom.
- Never touch your skin with latex gloves. If you do so, replace immediately.
- No food, drink or smoking is permitted in the Prototype Laboratories.
- No paper products are permitted in the cleanrooms (i.e. cardboard, paper, tissues, styrofoam or foam rubber).
- No pencils, erasers or retractable pens are permitted in the Laboratories.
- Ask permission before bringing in or removing anything from the Laboratories.
- No cosmetics are to be worn in the cleanroom.
