Michael Charles Gross was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. In 1995, he received a B.S. in electrical engineering, electrophysics concentration, from Rice University. In 1996, he received an M.S. in electrical engineering, optics concentration, from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Mr. Gross is now pursuing his Ph.D. in E.E. at Georgia Tech, working in the Ultrafast Optical Communications Group. His research projects include a gain-switched distributed feedback laser with several stages of pulse compression, a passively mode-locked semiconductor/fiber laser, and an optical memory loop.
Mr. Gross is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (Lasers and Electro-Optics Society), the Optical Society of America, and Eta Kappa Nu. He has received the Shackleford Research Fellowship, the Metz Scholarship, the Allen Scholarship, and the National Merit Scholarship.
When not working in the lab (or writing reports), Michael enjoys engaging in physical activities. Having retired from the Rice Rugby Football Club, he now concentrates on racing with the Georgia Tech Cycling Team and weight training. He also likes to cook.
