Faculty Lead Research Poster Workshop
March 11, 2010
Lead by Dr. Doug Williams and Dr. Jeff Davis, the workshop focused on the technical aspects of research poster creation from the judge's point of view.

Christina Bourgeois discussed design, layout, and formatting of research posters and provided tips on selecting and communicating research details on the poster. Veteran Scholars shared their experience with creating and presenting research posters.

Faculty Panel

Dr. Deepak Divan, Dr. Bonnie Ferri, Dr. Andy Peterson, Dr. Manos Tentzeris, and Dr. Patricio Vela participated in a panel discussion that focused on the benefits of graduate school. The panel members talked about their personal path to academia and professional work history, the benefits of having advanced degrees, challenges that undergraduates face now that are different from what they faced as undergrads, and gave advice about selecting a graduate program and area of study.

Rockwell Collins Facility Tour

ORS Scholars and Mentors participated in a tour of the Rockwell Collins Duluth, Georgia Facility. The tour included a description of the opportunities available at Rockwell Collins and an overview of just a few of their projects.

Rockwell Collins Representatives connected with ORS Scholars and Mentors in their research groups giving students an opportunity learn more about opportunities at Rockwell Collins and network with their corporate sponsors.

Scholar-Led Research Roundtable

This annual ORS event is an opportunity for Scholars to communicate the purpose, proposed tasks, and timeline of their group research project to an audience of peers, faculty, and staff. The Project Summary is the basis for the presentations, which all Scholars participate in. A moderator fields audience questions.

President’s Undergraduate Research Award
October 2009
Interested ORS Scholars were advised by Jill Auerbach as they prepared proposals in hope of being granted the coveted President’s Undergraduate Research Award for Spring Semester 2010. Proposals were submitted by the October 19 deadline. We wish our Scholars the best!

Project Summary Submission
October 20, 2009
Each ORS research group submitted a Project Summary that effectively communicates the purpose, proposed tasks, and timeline of their research project for the 2009-2010 year.

Research Skills Workshop Conducted by Jill Auerbach
October 1, 2009
ORS Scholars learned about the process of preparing a project summary as well as how to condense material for presentation purposes. Research groups practiced preparing a ninety-second-or-less mini-commercial about their specific project and groups volunteered to present and receive feedback. Experienced Scholars led discussions focused on defining goals and how to put research in context.

GT Family Weekend

ORS Scholars, Mentors, and staff described the Opportunity Research Scholars’ Program, discussed the benefits and responsibilities of participating in the program, and told about research projects as part of the GT Family Weekend Event in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

ORS 2009 Kick-Off Meeting Led by Jill Auerbach
September 21, 2009
Research skill development and an emphasis on experiences that develop those skills were the focus of the ORS Program Kick-Off Meeting. Guest speaker Dr. Greg Durgin spoke to Scholars about how his experience with research as an undergraduate student shaped his decision to go into academia. Matt Trotter, Second Year ORS mentor, relayed the importance of measuring success not only in research results but in skills obtained. In addition to an overview of the year to come by Jill Auerbach, Scholars were challenged to get to know each other on a more personal level by participating in an ice breaker activity.

ORS Information Session
August 27, 2009
Jill Auerbach, ORS Program Director, spoke to prospective new Scholars about the benefits and responsibilities of participating in the ORS Program. Current Mentors and Scholars described their research projects to potential new participants and answered questions.

ECE Rush
August 27, 2009
A sizable crowd gathered at the ORS table during ECE RUSH where Jill Auerbach and several ORS Scholars and Mentors answered questions and described their research projects. ECE Rush is an annual activities fair.

ORS Mentors gathered to explore strategies of positive mentorship of undergraduates in preparation for the year in research.

Returning Scholar Welcome Back Meeting
August 25, 2009
Scholars continuing with the ORS program met to discuss research area options for the upcoming year. Returning Scholars have the first opportunity to select new research groups at the beginning of each program year.
