ECE undergraduate programs provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of engineering and science and a variety of electives to tailor studies to a specific technical interest. Undergraduate degree options include:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
- Joint B.S./M.S. Degree Program
Both electrical engineering and computer engineering majors may participate in the International Plan or Cooperative Education Program, two special academic initiatives at Georgia Tech. Students who successfully complete these programs receive special degree designations on their diplomas.
With a firm grounding in the basics, Georgia Tech ECE students are well prepared for either graduate school or the high-tech corporate environment, where starting salaries average well over $60,000/year. Examples of ECE research and what electrical and computer engineers may do on the job include:
- creating technologies that make consumer electronics smaller, faster, and cheaper;
- developing electronics and remote sensing technologies that withstand the rigors of space exploration missions;
- producing imaging techniques that diagnose diseases like cancer;
- inventing sensors that measure substances like glucose or alcohol in the bloodstream;
- providing solar energy systems to communities that exist without electricity; and
- building devices that detect hidden dangers or illegal substances, such as land mines or narcotics
ECE undergraduate programs at Georgia Tech consistently place in the top 10 of the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings of universities and academic programs. In the 2009 poll, electrical engineering placed fifth and computer engineering ranked sixth.
